Sport England Yorkshire Participation Survey 2005
“Increasing levels of physical activity is a core objective for sporting
organisations in England. However, a lack of reliable information at local level
regarding actual levels of participation was identified. Therefore, the specific
aim of this research was to provide data on physical activity and sports participation
amongst a regionally and locally representative sample of adults aged 16 years
and over from across the Yorkshire region in order to reliably benchmark local
authority areas against a set of key policy related indicators.”
Sport England Web Site
We have produced 3 separate interactive maps covering the Sport England Physical
Participation Survey for the Yorkshire and Humber Government Office Region;
a summary of results, and more detailed coverage of selected indicators. All
data is presented at local authority level.
Maps are in SVG format and require SVG to be installed. See Can't display map?
for more details.
The summary data shows overall regional totals for transportation related physical
activity, bicycling related physical activity, leisure related physical activity,
health as defined by respondent, the 5 KPIs described below, satisfaction with
sporting provision, and self reported smoking prevalence.
The other two maps are further divided by gender, age, social class and possession
of a disability.
Levels of transportation related physical activity and leisure related physical
activity.
5 key performance indicators defined by the survey;
KPI 1 - participation in sport and active recreation, defined as 30 minutes
'moderate intensity' sport and active recreation at least 3 times a week,
KPI 2 - club members, defined as having been an active member of a sports club
in the past 4 weeks,
KPI 3 - coaching, defined as having received coaching to improve performance
within the past 12 months,
KPI 4 - competitive sport, defined as having taken part in competitive sport
in the past 12 months,
KPI 5 – volunteering, defined as spending at least one hour a week on
voluntary work for sport.
