Indications of Public Health in the English Regions: 6 Sexual Health
This report is the sixth in the series ‘Indications of Public Health in the English Regions’ commissioned by the Chief Medical Officer and has been produced jointly by the Association of Public Health Observatories (APHO) and the Health Protection Agency (HPA). Sexual health is identified as one of the key national priorities for action in the White Paper Choosing Health.1 Influenced by the broad definition of sexual health provided in the National Strategy for Sexual Health and HIV,2 this report presents regional comparative data on a wide range of indicators of sexual health and its determinants, and highlights apparent inequalities. The report also provides rich contextual information for the indicators and includes details of key national targets and recommendations. Information on data sources is also provided. As regional comparisons often mask sub-regional inequalities, selected sub-regional analyses have been placed on the South West Public Health Observatory website (www.swpho.nhs.uk) to coincide with the publication of this report. However, as the report highlights, there is currently limited availability of comparative indicators at PCT and Local Authority levels.

Chlamydia briefing
YHPHO Chlamydia Briefing
Chlamydia Trachomatis is the most common sexually transmitted infection in the UK. This report presents a picture of the baseline epidemiology of chlamydia, nationally and regionally at the onset of the National Chlamydia Screening Programme.
We also present a case study of the socio-demographic distribution of chlamydia diagnosed at different healthcare settings in Leeds, the largest urban centre in the Yorkshire & Humber Region. This illustrates the importance and potential for utilising existing data sources to gain a more comprehensive local picture of diagnostic activity.
The report will be useful to providers and commissioners of sexual health services in strategic health authorities and primary care trusts. Its aim is to inform the targeting of interventions and provide a background against which the impact of screening can be assessed in future

Sexual health is a key element of the Public Health White Paper Choosing Health: Making healthy choices easier, backed by 300m to modernise and transform sexual health services in England. This builds on the work already being done to implement the National Strategy for Sexual Health and HIV (2001), which sets out the Government key aims and goals for improving sexual health and modernising services over 10 years. The other critical link is with the Government's Teenage Pregnancy Strategy.
