Health Inequalities

This is a collection of resources for measuring and monitoring health inequalities that is being developed by YHPHO. The resources include work undertaken in YHPHO, and signposts to other data sources, methods and expertise.

The tool allows the user to investigate two scenarios – an intervention applied across the local authority and the same size of intervention applied only in the most deprived quintile. The tool thus supports action to reduce health inequalities within every local authority.

The tool was developed by the Association of Public Health Observatories for the Department of Health.

This version of the tool was released in June 2008 and supersedes the previous prototype tool that was restricted to Spearhead authorities.

YHPHO LBoI data Tabulator

Yorkshire and Humber PHO have developed a downloadable access database that provides summary data for PCTs and Local Authorities across the country. The tool enables users to create bespoke tables of indicators in the basket based on combinations of indicators and geographical areas.

Please note that this work is still in development. YHPHO intend to develop an on-line version of this database so that updates to the indicators can be incorporated automatically. At present the downloadable version has data for 50 of 70 indicators in the local basket.

Health Poverty Index

The HPI tool aims to provide an overall picture of health poverty in an area, and incorporates a range of measures that influence health and health inequalities.

Yorkshire and Humber PHO have produced a summary of the HPI for the Yorkshire and Humber Region. The report includes charts and graphs for each indicator and for each of our 21 local authorities, together with some summary analysis for the region.
It also provides some advice on how the HPI can be used locally to inform and support partnership working on health inequalities.
