NHS Next Stage Review

Background to the NHS Next Stage Review

In 2007, Lord Ara Darzi was invited to lead a wide ranging review of the NHS to ensure that a properly resourced NHS is clinically led, patient-centred and locally accountable. The NHS Review aimed to engage patients, NHS staff, the public and the voluntary sector. It focused on three over-arching themes:

  1. quality and safety
  2. access
  3. reducing inequalities

and looked at 8 patient pathways, aiming to focus on NHS care from the cradle to the grave. To ensure that it would be locally "fit for purpose" and accountable, it was driven by SHAs.

In Yorkshire and Humber, YHPHO was actively involved in the 8 clinical pathway groups and provided supporting data/intelligence to identify what improvements should be made to the pathways patients take through the health care system; identify best practice that patients already experienced in Y&H and identify what did not yet exist to provide services to these standards.

Supporting resources for each of the 8 Clinical Pathway groups are available to download below:

Implementing Healthy Ambitions in Yorkshire and the Humber

In May 2008, NHS Yorkshire the Humber published Healthy Ambitions, its strategic framework for improving health and healthcare in the region.

As part of our core- work programme YHPHO are playing a lead role in delivering cross- cutting health intelligence to support the implementation of the Healthy Ambitions in the region. This will include specific projects on behalf of the newly established Delivery Boards, linked to the recommendations set out for each clinical pathway theme.

A key initial deliverable has been a set of Health Intelligence Practice Profiles and PCT Level Profiles for the region . This work was commissioned through the Primary Care Think Tank, established as part of the Next Stage review process in Yorkshire and the Humber. Further development of this product and other outputs are planned for the coming year.
